Refinery Corridor Healing Walk July 17, 2016, Richmond, CA

Sunday, July 17

E.A.R.T.H. Lab was invited to film parts of this peaceful protest by the organizers of the Refinery Corridor Healing Walks. This was the final walk of the 2016 season. It began in Rodeo, CA and ended up at the ocean in Point Richmond.

This thirteen mile walk began at the Conoco-Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo, CA. We passed Kinder Morgan's pipeline manufacturing facility and the Chevron refinery in Richmond, CA on the way to Point Richmond.

The walk was characterized by a love-based approach to environmental activism. On stops at refineries along the walks, leaders prayed for oil executives to find the goodness within themselves, instead of condemning them for their actions. Participants signed an agreement to do the same, pledging not to speak out of anger and hatred but rather out a respect and love for the environment. Water from the refinery corridor watershed was blessed prior to the walk and carried at the front of the group. Participants were encouraged to spend time with the water during the event, walking in prayer with it. The walk ended at the beach, where everyone enjoyed a picnic at the edge of the water we had marched in honor of.
